NOTES:
The band rehearsed and recorded a session of demos in September of 1998 at Daniel Lanois and Mark Howard's El Teatro studio in Oxnard, California, an old converted Spanish language theatre. Many of these songs ended up, in their final versions, on Californication, released the next year. Two tracks from this recording have surfaced officially, both on the Around The World single; a demo version of Parallel Universe and a portion of a longer jam called Teatro Jam. The rest only surfaced via a leak in September of 2014.
There are two discs worth of songs here, spread out over 4 reels of tape. The tracks with Anthony's early vocals seem to be run-throughs of the more finished songs, with, at the very least, guide melodies. The others are far looser, with only scatting, rough vocals or none at all. Whether they are separate and should be seen as two different collections of songs (possibly recorded over different days) is unknown at the moment. Note: the date of September 15, 1998 comes from the CD-R that held the recordings. There's a chance this is the date that the CD was compiled, not the date that the tracks were recorded.
Plate of Brown, Tellin' a Lie, Mommasan, Andaman & Nicobar, Sugar Sugar, Trouble In The Pub, and Boatman were completely unheard of prior to these leaks. Californication and Purple Stain contain vastly different instrumentation and are essentially different songs, though Purple Stain's original ending is present. I Like Dirt and Bunker Hill have different bridges. Quixotic Elixir and How Strong are in their fairly early stages. It appears, magically, that you can actually hear the band writing Quixotic Elixir in real time on this recording.
